Case in point. My thoughts exactly. (Please Note: In spite of her eccentric garb, I do adore Helena Bonham Carter:)
Most actors show up to auditions dressed like hobos. And then wonder why no one wants to hire them. Or get to know them better.
Think I’m exaggerating? Take a look at the following pics I sneakily snapped at a recent commercial audition (aka cattle call of heinous attire). Tell me if you’d hire these gals.
TAKE UNO:
I’m gonna title this candid, “Wearing Uggs and No Bra’s Trendy, Right?”
FYI: For this commercial the character description in Breakdown Express called for “Office Casual.” I’d love to know what so called “office” this gal was working in.
Sadly, the girl next to her is not much better off. In Take Uno her pants don’t look sooo bad. But don’t hold your breath.
Cut to TAKE DOS:
(And NO, I don’t speak Espagnol. As you’ll quickly discover, I get simply enjoyment from spontaneous, pretentious usage of Spanish words;)
I’m calling this candid, “What’s HEMMING?”
I might add, this girl was wearing three inch heels.
Question: If you can’t be bothered to:
• Buy pants that aren’t two sizes too big
• Find a tailor
why the hell would you ever expect to book a $1000/day job? Yep, this particular union commercial paid $1000 buckaroos (plus 10% residuals) for one day of shooting. And that’s not including possible overtime. Do these gals look like they’re worth $1000 bucks a day? (That’s a rhetorical question).
If you’re a professional, look professional! I am baffled by the lack of aesthetic professionalism among so-called “professional actors.” When did it become acceptable to show up to an audition (aka job interview) with matted hair and wrinkled $5 pants from the Goodwill, expecting to book an $1000/day job?
It pains me to no end to see actors ignorantly shooting themselves in the foot by showing up to auditions looking homeless. As an actor, taking great care of your appearance and thus upping your bankability is one of the few things you have complete control over. You don’t want to make an appearance on this blog.
I can’t imagine showing up to an interview at Goldman Sachs with questionable hair that may or may not have been washed the past week, a polka doted blouse that, upon closer inspection, isn’t polka doted; its bits of dandruff; and an overall ensemble that could work double duty as an orphan costume in the musical Oliver!
The days of donning ill fitting garb and subsequently sabotaging your bankability end here. I’m here to take you from looking like an extra in Moulin Rouge to movie star, OMG orgasmic gorge so you feel great and book more jobs. Curious how and where I can step in to help? Learn more here.
If you’re an actor reading this, currently indifferent to what you wear, yet wondering why you’re not getting call backed or booking work let this blog be help you connect the dots.
How you look matters!
Hollywood is built on fantasy and image. You may choose not to buy into this fact, but others are and they’re the ones booking work consistently. It’s not luck, nor is it accidental.

Loving your articles- I especially like the ones about “attitude as an accessory”-
although am surprised you thought sandra should win? hah i was sure meryll would win for julie and julia- what r your thoughts?? also I was on spring break during the oscars:( when did this kiss between meryll and sandra occur- please explain- love ya
xoxoxo
ps congrats on this website- its AWESOME- i love your reel- esp the one with you and the guy- but it shows a lot of sides to you as an actress so its very cool
MADS!!!
Thanks so much for you very generous comment!
Acting wise, let’s be real. Meryl always trumps it.
I wanted Sandra to win from a place of “I love her, she’s never been nominated let alone won anything….” rather than I thought she did THE most stellar acting job this year. Although I did think she was great.
You should youtube Sandra’s Oscar acceptance speech. It’s brilliant and she makes reference to Meryl as “her lover.” She kissed her at this year’s SAG Awards.
Thanks so much for reading!!! Your support really means the world to me.
xxxoo Love YOU
I think you have created many rather fascinating points. Not too many others would actually think about it the way you just did. I am truly impressed that there is so much about this subject that has been uncovered and you made it so nicely, with so considerably class. Tiptop one, man! Genuinely wonderful things right here. Wishing you 2011 Happy New Year!
